BIG MIKE
What is Big Mike? After yesterday's post I am sure that a lot of you are asking yourselves and us this question. Don't worry we have the answer.
What appears to be just a big train to my 3 year old nephew is actually a Mikado-type steam locomotive that was built in 1920. This is not just a replica, its the real thing. These engines got their nickname from the railroad men and the nickname has stuck. We are so lucky in the Treasure Valley to have a Big Mike of our own.
Our Big Mike was an all-purpose freight engine that traveled from North Platte., Neb., to Fruitland, Idaho running along the Union Pacific line.
Donated to the city in 1956 our retired locomotive was first housed in Julia Davis Park. Big Mike was moved in December 2007 to the Boise Depot. He got cleaned and repaired for coming generations to enjoy!
While enjoying the view and landscape at the Boise Depot don't forget to stop
and say "Hello" to Big Mike.
